Airports are considered to be the gateway to a city. It is often the first and last place a person sees when entering or leaving a city. As such, airports generally give us an idea of the place we, as tourists, are visiting. Yet in Bangladesh, most airport terminals have historically been disconnected from their local context, both in form and spirit. As is the case with the current international terminal of Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.

Located approximately 15 kilometers north of Sylhet’s city center, the airport is surrounded by lush fields and low-lying hillocks, known locally as tilas. Owing to the construction of the airport, the surrounding area has somewhat transformed into a budding commercial zone on the outskirts of the city. Hotels, restaurants and parks have since been established which enabled places near the airport to be seen more as public destinations for the locality.
